Hey there Ladies, (Gentlemen this is good for you to hear to, but sorry not written to you specifically...)

This past Saturday I took the day to go spend it with Beth Moore and some girls from the youth group. The morning started early with Starbucks coffee and girl talk at 8:00 am. We got to the church to find our seats in a very busy sanctuary. They didn't know what to expect, but were soon surrounded and overwhelmed with the 652 woman sitting and chatting it up around them.

If you don't know what this whole thing was, I'll tell you. Beth Moore is a wonderful, exuberant, Christian woman who has great influence in woman's lives all over the world. She leads Bible studies at her home church and has written a few books and studies. The past three years she has been doing simulcasts, where she leads a seminar and churches around the US get in on satellite feed so it's kinda like we are there with her, but kinda not, but she speaks to us like we are.

So.. this seminar was on her latest book, So Long Insecurities. She wasn't expecting to publish the book, it was just a way to vent at the time, but soon realized God had bigger plans for it. As woman in our culture or in the world really, we are dominated by our insecurities. We worry so much about ourselves and what people might think of us that we are unable to walk confidently in who Christ made us to be in order to live exceptional lives to reach others for Christ.

As I listened and watched my girls emotionally absorb words that were far too weighty for them to bear without a physical response, the gospel in its most unadulterated form was preached to my heart once again. That God, in the cross of Jesus Christ, has forgiven us and brought us into fellowship with Himself is the most compelling news our ears will ever hear and our minds will ever conceive. That He esteems us and deems us valuable is just beyond comprehension. I mean, we’re pretty bad. Okay, we’re really bad, and even a tad bit unlovable a lot of the time.

The whole day was based off the scriptures out of Ephesians 4:17-32. I would write it all out, but you can go look it up for yourself. It's an amazing portion of God's word that spoke directly to my heart.

Ephesians 4:20-24 "You, however, did not come to know Christ that way. Surely you heard of him and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness."

We are called to be set apart in Christ. Once we have Christ in our lives, it is not us that lives, but Him!! How exciting. To know that Christ dwells in my heart, my very being is no longer a slave to sin, but to Him for His glory! I am loved so deeply, sometimes it's hard to imagine why me? Why did God choose me to be His? I am nothing... I am just a messed up girl who has sinned so much that God could not love me. These are just a few thoughts I have struggled with over the years, but today once again I was reminded of God's love for me. He has set me free from my sinful ways and a life of living Hell. I no longer desire to push myself away from God, but draw nearer to Him.

One thing I was reminded of today was that it is my choice to believe what God says about himself and myself is truth. As a woman of God, I have the write to know the truth. He says in His word that I am precious and wonderfully made. Yet, I still live like I'm not. Why? Because Satan has put those thoughts in my head and I have to decide to not believe that as truth.

Beth asked a question that struck my heart. It made my pulse quicken and heart pump. How convinced am I that I am truly, deeply loved??? If I truly believed that, why don't I act like it? I'm still so self absorbed and worried what people think of me, that I don't have time to think about what God thinks about me. I was brought back to my knees and to scripture when I had to tackle this question. I don't want to worry about what others think about me, just what God thinks about me. He loves me! He wants me to walk secure in that knowledge and to be set apart in my culture as an exceptional woman of God. Every woman (yes and you men) can have a peace that God wants your heart to be His and in that He wants us to live like we are dearly loved children. To walk proud and tall because of this love. Ladies, you are loved! You are beautiful and wonderfully made! Now go live like it!

Here is an acronym that Beth used to spell out Secure. It shows us what we can have when we choose to believe the truth that God set in front of us in His word. You are loved!:)

Saved from Herself

Entitled to the Truth

Clothed with Intention

Upended by Love

Exceptional in Life

Have a blessed day and I challenge you to start memorizing His word. Hide it in your heart so you never forget how much He loves you!

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well- Psalm 139:14

Your sister in Christ,

Time is flying by! It is already April, almost a month since the Blaze Conference. We have all been back in our mundane lives for some time now, cruising through school, trudging through work... you get the picture. Our lives get so busy and crazy we often forget the high that we get from an encounter with our personal Lord and Savior.
Last month 45 of us made a trip up to Seattle for a conference on making disciples, who make disciples, also known as THE Cause. What is THE Cause? Well.. We have all heard of the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19, "Go (literally, as you ARE going) and make disciples..." Our Great Commission as Christians is THE Cause. Why? Because it was the last thing Jesus left with us before He ascended to Heaven to be with His Father. We are called to lead others to Christ and help them to become stronger in their faith and help them to begin reaching others for Christ and so on...
We learned about God's holiness, the fire that blinds. God is in control of EVERY DETAIL of the universe and our lives!! "Are not the sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows" (Luke 12:6-7). "'For I know the plans I have your,' declares the LORD, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11). Once we realize the intensity of God and his love He has for us, we are able to tell others, join THE Cause for Christ. We were created by God to be in fellowship with Him and to reflect His glory. To what degree are you reflecting the glory of God in your life? That's a good question for all of us to ask ourselves often. Sharing our faith is part of our worship!
We all have a desire to be a part of a cause. It's in our nature to want to be needed, to do something great. What we have forgotten is the biggest cause of all that we are all called as Christians to be involved with, THE Cause that consumed Jesus!! "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost" (Luke 19:10). Jesus used THE Cause to mobilize His "youth group." "'Come, follow me,'" Jesus said, 'and I will make you fishers of men'" (Matthew 4:19).
So what now? You might be saying to yourself, "I know that I'm saved. I know that I want to share with others what God is doing in my life. I know that I'm called to share my faith, but how?
We learned a lot about how to share our faith. It all begins with a relationship. Your family and friends are in your lives for a reason. It's an everyday decision to allow the Holy Spirit to create the spark of His power in your soul and to ignite conversations with your friends and people you are in contact with. Ask God to give you people to talk to, to be able to see the opportunities around you as they come by. We learned an acronym for GOSPEL to help us when we aren't sure how to share our faith and how to lead someone through the Gospel.
G- God created us to be with Him
O-Our sins separate us from God
S-Sins cannot be removed by good deeds.
P-Paying the price for sin, Jesus died and rose again
E-Everyone who trusts in Him alone has eternal life
L-Life with Jesus starts now and lasts forever!
That is such amazing news! How can we not want to share it with our friends and family? There was so much more we learned that I just don't have time to write about, but just remember how good our God is! Remember He saved you from your sins; they are forgiven! Our guilt has been removed!! Our accuser was defeated!! Praise God for what He has and is and will do in your life!!

For you, it is quite simple... meet at the church, find Mary, give her money, make sure you have a medical release form and find a seat on the bus. But for me, it begins months earlier. Finding out a date that works, calling the ice rink, filling out contracts, giving money, making sure our insurance policy covers dumb things kids do.. all that fun stuff. Then there is promotion. We throw out the word in Newsletters, Bulletins, Announcement Sheets, that I find laying on the floor after service, and even sending out postcard reminders. The night of is always a blast also. Fist things first.. COFFEE!! Then I'm running around making sure the bus driver will be there, that the keys to the bus will be there, medical release forms are filled out, my computer has life to do check-in... oh wait. I forgot it this year, so having to everything the old fashioned way, on paper. After all kids are checked in, we are doing head count. Kyky (here) Reece (fart sounds) Nicholas (I like turtles) Finally we get on the road. It's loud, dark, cold, and smells like an old bus mixed with body odor. The ice rink is empty when we arrive, beautiful with the lights down and steam swirling into the air. The calmness reverses as the floodgates are opened wide and a stampede of wild kids run out on the ice wearing helmets and carrying sticks! Now is the beginning of our crazy night. An hour and a half and many crashes later, we are all sweaty and gross, ready to call it a night and go home. The ride back is much quieter, but much stinkier. Call me crazy, but this is why I love Middle School kids. They are all so unique in their own way. I learn new things every day. Every event is different than the last. I love getting to know the kids in their comfort zones. There it is... one more night in the life of a leader of middle school kids....

Wintery Wonderland

Hey there fellow friends and family,

I am currently sitting at the basketball game at church with Kyky. Once there we all went tubing on the Autobahn for a long time... If you haven't been tubing before, let me quickly explain it... you get a tube that looks like one you would use on the water behind a boat, get in line and either patiently wait to get hooked to a cable pulley or take the short cut and walk up the hill which proves to be more painful than anything. Once to the top you find a line you want to be in, the hardest having the longest line, to the easiest that has the shortest line. Your turn comes and you have a few options. 1. sit in the tube facing forward and gently push off and go down the hill at a moderate pace all the while dragging your feet as brakes which makes you stop too far from the end and you end up having to walk the rest of the way. 2. repeat one without using your feet as brakes and you get to the end feeling pretty good about your experience. or 3. take a running head start, jumping onto your tube on your stomach and go barreling down the mountain at racing speeds uncommon to man and go flying past the finish lines and up the runway ramp and over that until you are stopped short by a fence and a security guard telling you next time use your feet as brakes....

The last run of the day, Joy and I went down in the double tube with the flip video spinning around flying down the hill. Just when I thought it was all over at the end, I stood up and Joshua yelled my name. I looked around for him and then the next thing I knew I was flying backwards over some small child and his tube that just used me as a bowling pin and landed on my head. It hurt so bad... Joy pulled me away in a tube to the side lines. Joshua came over and said he laughed when it happened!! He thought to himself, "Oh it's just Mary. She will be fine" Wow Joshua...

Dear Parents,

Wow! Summer is almost over! I hope it has been a good summer for you.
I am excited about the things we have lined up for this year middle
school ministries and wanted to take a few minutes and share with you.

I know this letter will arrive in the hands of some who may not have
been to the church in a while. I want to especially encourage you to
not miss this new opportunity for your student to become involved in a
youth group and learn what it means to live for God. Our students face
challenges today that can lead them down very bad paths in life. It is
crucial we reach students when they are in middle school and younger to
help them make good decisions that will last for life. Please let me
know if there's anything I can do to help your student become involved
here at the church.

I'm kicking off a new series this month called 'Friends'. We will be
taking a biblical approach to friendships and the relationships we have
in life. This is a great time for your students to bring their Bibles
and come to church prepared to learn new things from the Bible and put
them to practice in life. We'll be doing this series during our Sunday
morning service, which is 9:15-10:55am every Sunday morning in the
annex.

We're doing a 10-week series on Wednesday nights called Gospel Journey
Maui. This series takes a look at how we can articulate our faith among
a culture of many faiths. This series will take place on Wednesday
nights from 7-8:15 pm in the annex. We're kicking it off with a
special Luau at the Martinsons’ on Wednesday, September 9th. Their
address is: 1634 63rd Ave NE, Salem, OR 97317. We'd love to see your
student at this event!

Our next major event is BIG WEEKEND. This is our annual fall retreat.
The cost this year is $55 and includes all meals, transportation, etc.
The retreat will be held at Camp Tadmor and is the weekend of October
2nd-4th. This event is an amazing opportunity for your student and
their friends. It's a fast-paced weekend full of games, scripture,
worship, devotions, quiet time, and connecting time. Time and time
again I have seen students who are new or unconnected with few or no
friends attend this event and come back completely changed having made
some new friends for life. If there is ANYTHING that stands in the way
of your student attending this event let me help. We have some
scholarships available and I am willing to do whatever is necessary to
find a way for your student to attend this event.

I'm looking forward to another great year here at Salem First. If you
have any questions or anything I can help you with please let me know!

Hey guys!

I just wanted to let you know how proud
I am of you guys for all the work you did. You guys were truly the hands
and feet of Christ to everyone you met during the trip. I appreciate
your willingness to allow God to do incredible things through you.

Enclosed is a group picture from the
retreat. I hope you'll put this somewhere in your room where you can
see it and be reminded to pray for the people you met and the ministries
we worked with during the mission trip.

I also want to say a special thanks to
those who did student devotionals for our sessions. (Ross, Shannon,
Garrett, Joanna, Morris, Allison) These students did such a great job
of sharing their heart with us during the trip.

Congrats to the PPP. Your team won the
team competition for the week! Your team is invited to lunch on me at
Red Robin Sunday, August 16th, after the morning service.
Please let Mary know if you're going to be able to make it.

I wanted to remind you about the Go Wide
strategy we learned during the mission trip. It's my prayer we will
use this strategy to reach our friends for Christ this year! If you
forgot or need a reminder here we go!

1.) PRAY: Remember to pray for your friends
who don't know Christ.

2.) PURSUE: Grow in your relationship
with your friends. Find 'forks in the conversation' where you can talk
about God.

3.) PERSUADE: Help your friend understand
the importance of giving their life to Christ! If they were about to
jump off a bridge you'd work really hard to persuade them not to...
why not give the same effort to help your lost friends find faith in
Christ?

I'm so proud of you guys and look forward
to seeing how God is going to use you this year to reach out to your
friends. Have a great rest of the summer! See you soon!

Parents,

Wow! Summer is flying by! I wanted to
update you on a few things.

First off we had a GREAT mission trip!
I'm so proud of our students. They did a great job as they acted as
servants in the city of Portland doing everything from yard work to
serving peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to the homeless. Our students
worked really hard and did a great job. I did training with our students
during the mission trip teaching them the importance of reaching their
lost friends for Christ. Quiz them on the Pray, Pursue, Persuade system
they learned during the trip.

Our 8th graders only have a few more
weeks left in middle school.. September 6th will be their first day
with the high school. On Wednesday, September 2 we'll have an end of
summer bash at the Hall's from 7:00 to 10:00 pm.

We're starting a new series for August
called 'Destinations'. This series will take an important look at how
the decisions our students make lead them to various places and situations
in life. I hope you'll do everything possible to make sure your student
is able to attend every session of this series. They will receive life
changing information at each session!

Heads up on a few activities in August.
August 9th is our Swim Party at the Eldens. More details
are in the Newsletter. August 16th is the reward lunch at
Red Robbin for the PPP. Ask your child if they were on the mission trip
what team they were on, they will know.

I wanted to let you know about our next
major student ministries event so you can begin planning now to keep
your students calendar clear. Our fall retreat will be October 2-4 at
camp Tadmore. More information will come soon but you'll want to make
sure they don't miss this action packed weekend. The weekend will include
worship music, a special speaker, and tons of games and fun.

Thanks for all you do as parents! If
you ever have any questions or need anything don't hesitate to ask!

June was a busy but great month in student ministries. Thanks to all of you who brought your families to our sexual purity class. I hope that this class was very productive in opening lines of communication in your family. I want to give a special thanks to Pastor Greg Hall for his work with us on this class. We still have copies of Every Young Man's Battle and Every Young Woman's Battle available for purchase for $10 in the student ministries office. Our students did a great job this month with our Sunday morning series as we walked through what it means to be eye, body and heart pure.

This Sunday I'll be starting a new series on prayer. Please make every effort to have your student attend these very important and exciting Sunday morning services. Our regular schedule continues throughout the summer of 9:15-10:55 am Sunday mornings and 7:00-8:15 pm on Wednesday nights.

July 15-19th is our summer mission trip to Portland. It would be great to have your student attend. We will spend time working at various projects throughout the city including time at food banks as well as outdoor work. Students also have devotional time, quiet time, as well as lots of spiritual and life training from our leaders and adults. Time and time again I have seen our mission trips change the lives of our students. If your student is already plugged into the group this trip will improve their relationship with others as well as draw them closer to God. If your student is not plugged in this trip is an EXCELLENT opportunity to get them plugged in with the group. We work very hard to help our students form healthy Christ-like relationships with each other on these trips while serving God. I will have a parent meeting on July 12th immediately following second service in the annex to give any last minute details of the trip to parents and students.

As a follow up to our mission trip we'll head to the lake for a day on July 23rd for $15.
